Where OCR comes into play in the logistics chain
OCR comes into play when the information to be captured exists only as printed or handwritten text, with no coded identifier attached. This is the typical case of a batch number or a best-before date printed in plain text on a product with no dedicated barcode, a truck or container license plate read automatically at a dock gate, or a delivery note, a CMR consignment note or a paper invoice that is to be digitized without manual re-keying. A camera captures the image, a recognition engine identifies the characters and converts them into structured data, which can then feed a WMS, a TMS or an archiving system.
OCR sits alongside barcode and RFID rather than replacing them: these two technologies remain faster and more reliable when a coded identifier exists, while OCR steps in precisely where that is not the case, or to extract richer textual information than a simple identifier (full address, regulatory notices, a handwritten order number). Its reliability depends heavily on print or handwriting quality, lighting and shooting angle, which is why it is often paired with human verification for ambiguous cases, particularly for handwritten text.
In material-handling robotics, similar principles, cameras and AI image processing, are used to recognize load carriers or obstacles, although this is a distinct onboard-vision use case from document OCR proper.
