RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is a technology that reads, remotely and without contact or direct line of sight, the data stored on an electronic chip (tag) attached to a product, package, pallet or logistics asset, using a reader that emits a radio signal.
How RFID works in logistics
An RFID system relies on three elements: a tag (a label fitted with a chip and an antenna), a reader that emits a radio field and retrieves the data, and software that processes this information. Passive tags, the most common in logistics, have no battery: they activate only when they enter the reader's field, which limits their range to a few meters but sharply reduces their cost. Active tags, powered by a battery, transmit continuously and reach further; they are reserved for specific uses such as tracking high-value assets or vehicles across a large site.
The main advantage of RFID over a conventional barcode is that it doesn't require a direct line of sight between the reader and the tag, and a single pass through a gate can read dozens of tags simultaneously, regardless of how the package is oriented. This makes it well suited to dock gates (automatic counting of a complete load), accelerated cycle counting (reading a whole rack in a few seconds), or tracking reusable assets (bins, plastic pallets, containers). In return, the unit cost of an RFID tag remains higher than that of a simple printed barcode label, which explains why the two technologies coexist depending on the value and turnover of the items involved.
In the warehouse, RFID is generally integrated into the WMS to automate receiving, put-away or order picking, and can complement standardized GS1 identifiers (barcode, EAN/GTIN, SSCC) rather than replace them entirely.
