OTIF (On Time In Full) is a logistics indicator that measures the percentage of orders delivered both within the agreed deadline (on time) and with exactly the quantity and references ordered (in full), with no stockout, no reference error and no partial delivery.
How OTIF is calculated
The calculation principle is as follows: an order is only counted as compliant if both conditions are met simultaneously — delivered on the date or within the agreed time window, AND delivered in full, down to the exact reference and quantity. OTIF is expressed as a percentage of the total number of orders (or order lines) over a given period. An early, late, incomplete delivery, or one with a reference error, removes the order from the compliant count, even if only one of the two criteria is missing.
This requirement to meet both conditions at once makes OTIF stricter than a simple on-time rate or an isolated fill rate: a company can post an excellent on-time delivery rate while still having a mediocre OTIF if part of those deliveries is incomplete. The indicator is particularly closely tracked in relationships between manufacturers and large retailers, where it often serves as the contractual basis for late-delivery or non-compliance penalties, as well as for supplier scorecards. It is generally presented as one of the standard logistics KPIs, alongside the service rate, inventory turnover and stock coverage.
A persistently low OTIF usually reveals an underlying issue rather than a one-off incident: insufficient supplier reliability, poorly managed lead time, an undersized safety stock, or scheduling that is stretched too thin. Regularly tracking OTIF, by product or by customer, therefore often serves as the starting point for targeted improvement actions across the supply chain.
FAQ
How is OTIF calculated?
An order is counted as compliant only if it is delivered within the agreed timeframe AND with the exact quantity and references ordered. OTIF is the percentage of orders meeting both conditions simultaneously, out of the total number of orders delivered, over a given period.
Are OTIF and service rate the same thing?
The service rate covers several definitions depending on the scope chosen (lead time, quantity, order line). OTIF is a precise, combined definition: it requires both on-time delivery and full order compliance at once, which makes it a more demanding measure.
