An electric pallet truck is a pallet truck whose traction, lift, or both, are battery-powered, which removes the physical effort of manual traction. From semi-electric to ride-on models
Three main configurations share the market. The semi-electric model only motorizes the lift (or, more rarely, only traction): an entry-level compromise between manual effort and electric comfort. The walk-behind electric pallet truck motorizes both traction and lift, with the operator walking on foot and steering via the tiller: this is the fast-growing segment, driven by the rise of lithium-ion batteries. The ride-on pallet truck, with a fold-down platform, lets the operator travel with the machine over longer distances without walking.
Battery choice is a key factor. Lithium fully recharges in about 2 hours (versus about 6 hours for lead-acid), accepts partial recharges during the day, a practice known as opportunity charging, and requires almost no maintenance. Lead-acid remains cheaper to buy on premium ranges, but requires regular maintenance (water level, terminal cleanliness) and a full recharge before reuse.
On price, entry-level lithium models range from about €990 to €2,600 excl. VAT depending on the brand, with premium models (Jungheinrich EJE) between €6,470 and €8,615 excl. VAT. Used units typically sell for €1,100 to €2,900, and rental starts around €76 to €150/day. On the regulatory side, a walk-behind electric pallet truck generally doesn't fall into any CACES R489 category: the employer simply needs to issue a driving authorization after suitable training. Ride-on models, on the other hand, fall under category 1A. This doctrine should be confirmed case by case with Carsat or INRS depending on the exact configuration of the machine.
