Lean (or lean management) is a management approach aimed at maximizing the value perceived by the customer while minimizing waste (muda) across processes, production, logistics, administration. Originating in the Toyota Production System, it relies on a set of complementary tools: 5S, kaizen, kanban, just-in-time and takt time in particular.

A philosophy more than a single method

Lean isn't a stand-alone tool but an overall approach that ties several methods together around a single goal: only produce or mobilize what genuinely creates value for the customer, and systematically eliminate the rest. This elimination of waste, called muda in Japanese, relies on concrete tools: 5S to organize a workstation, kaizen for continuous improvement in small steps, kanban to run flows on a pull basis, just-in-time to synchronize production with demand, and takt time to set the production pace against customer demand.

Applied to logistics, this is referred to as "lean logistics" or "lean warehousing": reducing unnecessary travel within the warehouse, standardizing order-picking stations, reducing intermediate stock, making flows between receiving, storage and shipping more reliable. A concrete example is the milk-run, a scheduled line-side supply route, which directly translates lean principles into a site's internal logistics.

Lean differs from a blunt cost-cutting exercise: it aims for lasting process improvement, driven by frontline teams themselves rather than imposed solely from above. Its implementation generally requires time and sustained management commitment, more than a one-off project.
