Two levels of interoperability in logistics
The first level concerns data exchange between business software. The VDA 5050 protocol, an open communication standard between fleet managers and mobile robots, was designed to address this problem: it defines a common, manufacturer-independent language for missions, states and commands. A site that favors VDA 5050-compatible equipment thus retains the freedom to evolve its fleet or mix several suppliers, rather than remaining locked into a single proprietary ecosystem.
Without interoperability, every new piece of equipment or software added to a site requires a custom integration, which slows down and raises the cost of any change, whether connecting a WCS to several robot suppliers, or getting a new WMS to communicate with an already-installed fleet manager.
