The cross-docking is a logistics technique in which goods are moved directly from a receiving dock to a shipping dock, with minimal or no storage in between. The goal is to cut handling time and cost by skipping shelving altogether, unlike the logic of a traditional warehouse.
Three types of cross-docking
Pre-distributed cross-docking is the simplest: goods arrive already sorted and labeled by final recipient at the supplier's site, so they only need to be moved from one dock to another without being touched. Consolidated cross-docking brings together goods from several suppliers, which are sorted and allocated on site according to orders before being shipped out again — the typical case of a distribution platform that pools several supply streams toward the same point of sale. Hybrid cross-docking combines both logics: part of the flow moves straight through, while another part is temporarily stored to be combined with other incoming shipments.
Cross-docking differs from simple transloading (transferring goods from one trailer to another, often between transport modes, without sorting or recomposition) in the sorting and order-recomposition work it generally involves. It relies heavily on the quality of loading docks and dock levelers, on synchronizing carrier arrival times, and on an information system capable of routing every parcel to the correct outbound dock without error.
